Our basketball team won the Wigston school tournament in February 2017 beating 11 other teams. They then played Gartree High school in the final and won to become the overall Oadby and Wigston winners. They played in a tournament where 8 teams had each won their area final. Glenmere won their group stage beating Gartree High school, Badgerbrook Primary and John Wycliffe Primary. In the semi final they played Kibworth Primary school and won and then played Badgerbrook in the final to become the overall Year 5/6 Learning South Leicestershire school partnership basketball tournament winners.

Some children competed in the Ivanhoe Cross Country challenge in February 2017, which is a race that is open to schools and club runners, hosted by Ivanhoe Robins Athletics Club. Congratulations to Seamus and Myah, who both won the year 3/4 race. Jacob came 10th in the year 3/4 race out of 70 runners and was the 2nd year 3 over the line. Matilda came 12th out of 50 runners in the year 3/4 race and was the 4th year 3 girl over the line. Aisling came 9th in the year 5/6 race.

The children were lucky to spend the day with two international athletes for the day on Friday 24th February 2017. The athletes were, Kate Avery, who is one of the fastest women in the world over 10,000m and a Commonwealth games bronze medallist. Kate should be representing team GB at the world championships in London this summer. Kate was accompanied by Sam Stabler who is a 5000m runner, who started running at Prestwold Hall, gained a scholarship to the United States and is competing at a very high level nationally. Sam and Kate did an assembly for the children, put the more able KS2 runners through their paces, worked with the KS1 running club and took some of the junior classes for Javelin. The day was very successful and the children all enjoyed it.

Well done to the Glenmere Cross Country team who did brilliantly in the 2016 Oadby Wigston Schools Cross Country League.

Our Basketball team have been busy this month. On Sunday 15th January 2017 they went to the NIA in Birmingham where they took part in a tournament playing against teams from Glasgow, Leeds, Surrey and Cheshire. The team played really well and in their matches especially as they were playing some of the games against children who attend Basketball Academies. They ended the day by watching the British Basketball Trophy Final. It was a great experience for all the children and enjoyed by everyone!
