I have been at Glenmere for over 20 years. I completed by headship qualification many years ago and have been headteacher for 5 years. Glenmere is an amazing school to lead, the children, staff and community are wonderful. I have a passion for promoting good mental health through exercise and by taking care of pupil and staff wellbeing. I love to enrich the curriculum and give the children many memorable experiences.

I am a retired schoolteacher and my years in education have provided a firm grounding for my work as a governor at Glenmere. My teaching career started at a secondary school in Nottinghamshire and I was a head of a large department after two years. I then moved to be head of Humanities at Beaumont Leys School in Leicester. When the school lost its sixth form after a review of secondary education in the city, I moved to Wyggeston and Queen Elizabeth I Sixth Form College, teaching A level Sociology which I continued to do for the next twenty years. I was a personal tutor and was appointed as the Aim Higher co-ordinator for the college: the scheme was a government initiative to encourage more students to move into further and higher education. I also introduced and co-ordinated the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme at the college. These experiences were important for me as they resonated with my belief in giving children a holistic educational experience which maximises their potential and enriched their lives. That is why it is so good being part of the team at Glenmere: the educational experience that is offered to students is so good. Teachers think creatively to make the curriculum interesting and exciting and children are fully engaged in the learning process. The range of activities is awesome.

Parent Governor

I am immensely proud to be part of the team of governors at Glenmere. As a parent, I have seen both of my sons flourish academically and holistically as pupils of the school. They have had opportunities far beyond many primaries of the size and have benefited from some really outstanding teaching from committed, enthusiastic and talented practitioners. I put myself forward as a governor because I care passionately about education and want to support Glenmere to be the very best it can be. My own career is also in education; I teach English and Classics at Beauchamp College and have done for many years.’ As educators, it is our responsibility to ensure, to the very best of our ability, equality for our pupils, and to provide them with an educational experience which allows them to feel safe, secure and enthusiastic about their learning. I hope my values, skills and experiences help me to work with Glenmere to push every child to achieve their potential, not just in terms of test results but also in terms of confidence, creativity, sport, social-skills and all the myriad of those vital elements which cannot be summarised by a mark on a piece of paper

I am a deputy head of a large city school. I have recently completed my NPQH and will be started a new role as a headteacher after the summer. I have a passion for early years education and thoroughly enjoy coming into Glenmere to observe and support in this area.

 

Michelle Plumtree

I have been a parent at Glenmere for many years as two of my children have moved through the school and now left for high school. I am a qualified accountant and a chief financial officer of a large academy trust. I thoroughly enjoy being on the governing body and supporting them with their financial decisions.

 

Sally Weston

Parent Governor

I am very proud to be a parent governor at Glenmere to support the values and behaviours embedded in the school. I have two children presently at Glenmere and love to see them flourish year by year. I have a passion to ensure all children have the very best educational journey.
I have been a nurse at the local hospital over 20 years. My current role is a matron where I challenge, lead and promote excellence in practice. These skills are transferable within my role as governor to ensure Glenmere achieves the very best for their students and our children.

I am a retired Magistrate and also a retired headteacher of two local schools. I am the co-author of the primary school Relation Programme called R time. I still work in schools throughout the UK both presenting R time and also as a children’s wellbeing counsellor. I am very proud to be a governor of Glenmere Primary School

I was delighted to be able to take the role of community governor at Glenmere. I have a strong financial background and enjoy being on the finance committee and supporting the school with their financial decision

I am really thankful to be part of the team of Governor's at Glenmere.  I have a child in year 2, and I lead a Community Church in Wigston which provides support and relief to those who are struggling.  It's a privilege to provide support to the school and staff behind the scenes, and I'm excited to help think through how the school can be involved our community.

 

Tami Dorrington

I was lucky enough to be appointed class teacher at Glenmere in January 2015, and since then, I have gained the position of Deputy Head teacher and SENDCO. Throughout my 23 years of teaching, I have taught every age group from nursery through to Year 6 and am currently teaching year 4. I gained my BSC (Hons) QTS qualification from Worcester University and whilst there, I specialised in PE. I have coordinated all subjects throughout my years of teaching and am the current music coordinator at Glenmere. As well as singing, I play a variety of musical instruments and thoroughly enjoy encouraging the children of Glenmere to not only learn and appreciate all the aspects of music, but also use it to support their own mental health and wellbeing. 

 

Emma Carton

My teaching career began at Nottingham Trent University where I studied Primary Education for 4 years, teaching across the city of Nottingham, gaining my first teaching job in inner city Nottingham in 2011. During this time, I was maths coordinator and behaviour lead across the school. I joined Glenmere in 2016 when moving to Leicester. I t was then that I became a member of the governing body. I took on the first Year 6 for the school and now enjoy leading English, history, geography and PSHE across the school.

 

Ryan Upfield

This is my fourth year of teaching and I have worked in 3 different schools in 2 different counties. My previous school were both in Worcestershire: one being rural, one form entry and the oher being in an inner city two form entry school. I have taught in Year 6 each year. Before this, I worked in 2 different schools as a TA, sports leader and cover supervisor. I have a degree in children and youth studied foundation degree from Derby University and full degree from the Open University. I did my teacher training through Warwick University

The School Governors play a strategic role in making decisions and taking action to improve the standards of teaching and learning for all pupils at the school in a safe and stimulating environment.

Who are the school governors?

The governors are a group of 11 people drawn from different parts of the school community which ensures that a sufficient diversity of views and experience is represented:

  • Parent governors - selected by election and are drawn from parents and carers of pupils at the school.
  • Staff governors - selected by election from teaching and support staff paid to work at the school
  • Community governors - appointed by the governing body to represent community interests.

What do the school Governors do?

Governors have a range of duties and powers and a general responsibility for the conduct of the school with a view to promoting high standards of educational achievement. This includes setting targets for pupils achievement, managing the school’s finances, making sure the curriculum is balanced and broadly based, the learning environment is safe, appointing staff and reviewing staff performance and pay and many more. There are three sub-committees of the governing body which facilitate its work and they are:

The Data, Pupil & Curriculum Committee

The Data, Curriculum Committee comprises ensures that a wide range of experience and viewpoints are taken into consideration when we meet to discuss the following aspects that impact on teaching and learning and the opportunities that are available to pupils. The committee has responsibility for:

Achievement:

  • Monitoring & reviewing information on School Performance to include Raise Online & Data Dashboard.
  • Monitoring & reviewing school targets
  • Monitoring and reviewing in year progress for all year groups and all groups of pupils
  • Comparing school performance against national data
  • Reporting to parents according to statutory requirements
  • Monitoring achievement for all groups of pupils (inc. pupil premium)
  • Monitoring pupils work and carry out pupil conversations
  • Monitoring school target setting systems and how this is reported to parents.

Teaching & Learning:

  • Reviewing Raise Online / Data Dashboard, ensuring the school is meeting standards
  • Ensuring targeted support and action plans are in place for all teachers who are not at least good
  • Monitoring and reviewing quality of teaching across the school.
  • Monitoring teaching for groups of pupils (inc. pupil premium)
  • Monitoring intervention groups for all groups of pupils
  • Monitoring homework arrangements

Curriculum:

  • Ensuring the school is meeting National Curriculum requirements and to review the Curriculum Policy Statement ensuring it meets pupils needs
  • Monitoring and reviewing the curriculum with a focus on basic skills
  • Monitoring skills coverage of curriculum in all subjects
  • Parental engagement
  • Reviewing & updating SEF (Self Evaluation Form)
  • Monitoring & reviewing School Improvement Plan
  • Monitoring how school are developing pupils spiritual, cultural, social and moral awareness

Behaviour & Attendance:

  • Review Behaviour Policy and monitor school behaviour.
  • Review and Monitor attendance data against school and national targets

The Staffing and Finance Committee

The Finance provides guidance to the governing body and Headteacher on all matters relating to finance as outlined in the School’s Financial Regulations & Standing Orders. These will include:

Finance:

 

  • Producing & approving the annual budget and present it to the full Governing Body for ratification.
  • Reviewing the actual expenditure and monitoring statements at least once a term.
  • Receiving & Reviewing financial projections.
  • Approving expenditure and virements of sums over £5000 , sums below that amount are delegated to the Head Teacher
  • Conforming to the Schools Financial Value Standards in Schools.
  • Assessing the financial progress towards achieving the objectives in the School Improvement Plan.
  • Reviewing of leases & contracts – including traded services.
  • Ensuring Best Value principles apply.
  • Reviewing the financial implications on the budget of the Pay & Conditions document.
  • Receiving LA Budget and Out turn Statement (Section 122)
  • Receive the annual accounts and certificate of audit of
  • the School Fund Account and other voluntary funds held within school – Assessing the schools insurance cover to ensure that it provides adequate protection against risks.
  • Reviewing and approving the petty cash to be held by the school.
  • Ensuring LA financial procedures are complied with.
  • Obtaining quotations with a view to placing contracts./.orders, once the relevant Committee has drawn up a specification.

Staffing:

  • Considering applications from staff for variation to contract (secondments, early retirements, leave of absence, reduced working hours etc.)
  • Ensuring all personnel records are held securely.
  • Reviewing annually the staffing structure of the school ensuring that it meets the requirements of the curriculum and is in line with the School Improvement Plan.
  • Reviewing staff work / life balance, working conditions and well-being, including the monitoring of absence.
  • Implementing the Appraisal Policy and monitor teacher appraisal process.

  • Establishing & maintaining a rolling programme for Disclosure & Barring Service (DBS) Checks.
  • Staff training and CPD
  • Staff Grievance and Discipline (in line with school policies)
  • Staff dismissal, redundancy and redeployment

The Safe Guarding Health and Safety Committee

Premises Health & Safety:

  • Review the schools Health & Safety Policy on an annual basis.
  • Receive a regular report on accident statistics, near misses and incidents of violence or aggression.
  • Comply with current fire safety legislation & regulations: ‘level one’ fire risk assessment should be carried out by the school on an annual basis; ‘level 2’ or technical fire risk assessment is reviewed bi-annually.
  • Ensure Risk Assessments are carried out and reviewed on a regular basis.
  • Inspect the school site and buildings to enable maintenance and improvement, including security. (Site visit)
  • Review and Authorise upcoming offsite activities, ensuring that health and safety planning and risk assessments that have been undertaken for them.
  • Receive reports and audits from Health & Safety representatives (to include Caretaking & Cleaning)
  • Ensure staff & Governors undertake appropriate Health & Safety Training.
  • Monitor all safeguarding procedures.
  • Ensure that Health & Safety documents and records are up to date:
  • Fire log book
  • Asbestos on site
  • Premises log book (PAT Testing, Glazing Inspections, An annual check of PE Equipment / Playground Equipment
  • Establish & review an Accessibility Plan
  • Review e-safety policy & procedures
