Year 4
Hello and welcome to the class page for Year 4!
We hope you enjoy navigating your way through the pages in our section of the website and discover all the fabulous learning, activities and fun that goes on in Year 4 at Glenmere.
On our class page, you can find our class newsletters, knowledge organisers, planning, helpful websites and many more things to support learning at home and explain what we do at school too.
We practice our times tables using Chromebooks every day. To practice at home, please could you use the website https://www.timestables.co.uk/
Children can also download and use the White Rose Maths App entitled 1-Minute Maths. It is a great and fun way of practising addition, subtraction, multiplication and division skills.

Multiplication Check
As part of our math curriculum in Year 4, mastering times tables is a massive focus this year. Quick recall of multiplication facts helps build confidence and is essential for more advanced math concepts like division, fractions, and problem-solving.
In England, Year 4 pupils also take the Multiplication Tables Check (MTC) in the summer term, where they are tested on all tables up to 12 x12
What We Are Working on in School
-
Daily Practice: We incorporate short, fast-paced games, choral chanting, and pattern recognition into our weekly routine.
-
Understanding the 'Why': We don't just memorize; we look at arrays, repeated addition, and inverse operations so children truly understand what the numbers mean.
-
Speed and Fluency: Working towards recalling multiplication facts within a 6-second window, which is the standard expected during the MTC check.
How You Can Help at Home
Practicing little and often makes a huge difference! Here are a few fun ways to support your child:
-
Car Rides & Walking: Turn journeys into a game by firing off random multiplication questions (e.g., "What is $7 \times 8$?").
-
Online Tools: Encourage your child to log into Times Tables Rock Stars (TTRS) regularly to build up their speed and rock status.
-
Chanting & Songs: Sing along to multiplication counting songs—rhythm is a fantastic memory tool!
-
Flashcards: Create quick flashcards together where they test you (they love catching adults out when we make a mistake!).
Thank you so much for your continued support at home. If you have any questions about your child's progress or need login details for online resources, please don't hesitate to reach out!
Yearly Overview
At Glenmere we have established, within each year group, an overview for the year within out 'Broader Curriculum. This includes what is covered across the curriculum in addition to maths and English.
Class Newsletters
Our class newsletters celebrate all the great learning that has been going on in our class. They are full of the learning that has been taking place and how the children have been learning in many ways.
Supporting Your Child Letters
These letters will help you to give your child the support needed at home to compliment the teaching that is taking place in school. They are full of ideas and useful website links for the topics being taught.
Knowledge Organisers
Here are our knowledge organisers where you can see what is being taught in school and the vocabulary that we are using to support our knowledge and understanding.
At Glenmere, we like to ensure our pupils are prepared to engage as individuals, parents, workers and citizens with economic, social and cultural change, including the continued globalisation of the economy and society, are able to adapt to new work and leisure patterns and keep up with the rapid expansion of communication technologies. We will showcase our learning in Class Dojo in lots of different ways.
Please find below our Personal Development Overview and the books we use to support our learning with Everyone Welcome
Recommended Book List of Year 4
Have a look at the books that are recommended for year 4 readers.
Author of the Half Terms
Each half term, we spotlight an Author of the Half Term and dive deep into their life and stories. Alongside reading their books to build our VIPERS reading skills (Vocabulary, Inference, Prediction, Explanation, Retrieval, and Summarising), the children discover fun facts about the authors themselves, helping them connect the real people behind the books and sparking a genuine love for reading!
Our author for the first half of the autumn term is Anne Fine.

White Rose Maths
Here you will find lots of useful resources to link with our maths in school. We use the White Rose approach to our maths learning and there are some helping leaflets and web links for you to support mathematical learning at home.
White Rose Maths is excited to have produced a range of work booklets for parents and children to use over the summer or during next year. These booklets can be found on Amazon for the Kindle or downloaded below. There is one booklet for each of our blocks for Y1 to Y6.
